Houston officials celebrated the grand opening of Boulevard 61 on Monday, marking the addition of 90 affordable homes to a new 100-unit mixed-income apartment community in southwest Houston.

The development, located at 6101 Richmond Ave., received $2.5 million in funding from the City of Houston through the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program.

Mayor John Whitmire joined city officials, housing advocates and representatives from DMA Companies and other partner organizations for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The project is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to expand access to affordable housing and create more housing opportunities for Houston residents.

What to know about Boulevard 61

Boulevard 61 includes 100 apartment units, 90 of which are designated as affordable housing. The development combines affordable homes with market-rate housing in a mixed-income community.

Diana McIver, president and owner of DMA Companies, joined local and housing officials at the event.

Other speakers included District J Council Member Edward Pollard, District F Council Member Tiffany D. Thomas, who chairs the City Council’s Housing and Affordability Committee, and Mike Nichols, director of the city’s Housing and Community Development Department.

Jasper Crutison, state director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and representatives from the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation and Housing Alliance HTX also participated.

Following the remarks, attendees took part in the official ribbon cutting and tours of the property.

The city’s $2.5 million contribution through the federal HOME program supported the development as Houston continues working to address housing affordability and increase access to quality homes.
